Membership Committee

Membership Committee Goals:  2020-2021

The Committee staffs the membership table at community events and conducts outreach activities to attract new members and promote engagement. It also manages the membership database, assists in the membership renewal process, and monitors League membership publications, such as the Member Handbook and the Join Us brochure to ensure they’re up-to-date. Specific procedures for these activities are in the Appendices A-H of the Membership Procedure Manual, which also includes job descriptions.

League organizational chart

1. Diversify the LWVO membership to become more reflective of the City of Oakland.  Using our research report, Towards Broader, Stronger Community Bonds (June 2019,  Research Committee Demographic Data Report), we are identifying gaps in our membership and developing a strategy to address them.
2. Improve membership recruitment and outreach materials.  A new membership brochure is now available.
3. Improve on and expand our current activities to welcome, orient, mentorand retain new members. The idea is to increase the number of members who actively participate in the organization and are willing to assume leadership roles.
4. Continue outreach by:
  • Partnering with the Voter Service, Action and Communications committees
  • Identifying community events where LWVO want a presence
  • Holding social activities to attract new members
  • Using League logo apparel and tote bags to raise the League’s community visibility
5.  Welcome and retain new members by:
  • Holding welcome gatherings three times a year
  • Contacting members after events to do informal surveys about what they liked and to gauge how involved they want to be
  • Conducting a new member orientation twice a year

6. Streamline Committee Administration (e.g., developing a less complicated renewal process)
